Awakening – The Aussie Journey Begins – Part 1

A new wave of Christian faith is finally taking hold here in Australia. For the last year and a half we have seen significant changes occurring in many of the people we gather with, relate to or bump into.

So what is stirring these changes.. below the most common statements I hear:

– “the group/church/gathering we are currently involved in, just isn’t genuine or interested in doing life with us, we want to learn more about Christ centred living but don’t have anyone interested in putting in the hard yards”

– “I’m struggling with the programs, direction, attitude and vision that is forced upon me be my church”

– “If this is genuine community, if this is all that ‘church’ has to offer than, than I want out… but there’s no alternative?”

– “I see people everyday that ‘call them selves Christians’, they attend church and live good lives but are not willing to be obedient to Christ’s commands… they are fans of Jesus, not ‘followers of Jesus’.”

– “I’m disturbed by the thought that I’m finally questioning what I have been doing in our church for the last 10+ years.. will I get in trouble for asking or even thinking these radical things..?”

Whatever your struggle, whatever your thinking.. you’re not alone! Many people are asking these questions and God is stirring the hearts of believers everywhere for His Purpose. If we all just carry on and don’t think to question our innermost motives and spiritual groanings, than we are static and immovable.

God wants people who are constantly growing in His son Christ Jesus.. and seeking a deep relationship with him, so lets ask these sorts of questions together and seek Him for understanding..

Over the next few posts, we will start to explore what Christ is doing to His Church (his living body – not bricks). Stay Tuned..

Awakening Reveals Its Purpose Downunder

So what is the christian network ‘Awakening’ trying to achieve?

Awakening is striving to simplify our gatherings and teach Christ who is at the centre of all things. We have discovered through Gods Word that lasting change only occurs in a believer’s life when Jesus becomes the centre of their faith. (Col. 1:15-18, Hebrews 1:1-14) Christ, our rock and salvation should not be separated from any activity or godly desire; otherwise we are walking a path selfishly devised in our strength. (Psalm 62:2,1 Cor3:11, Cor 12:7-10, Philippians 4:13)
Knowing Gods purpose for your life starts by understanding His Eternal purpose and harnessing the Mystery that was revealed in Him. (Eph 3:11, Col 1:26)

Our key understanding of gathering as the body of Christ exists around these areas;

1. Awakening the life of Christ IN every believer
2. Teaching people to follow The Way, discipleship by following Christs commands
3. Revisiting and modelling the early churches Expression to reshape our modern groups and gatherings
4. Building a unique Network of fully devoted followers of Christ, empowering and encouraging them.

God’s Grace Be Upon you – Understanding Grace

(This is a circulated email that I liked – rarely does this occur!)

There once was a man named George Thomas, a preacher in a small Texas town.

One Sunday morning he came to the Church building carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage, and set it by the pulpit. Eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, the Preacher began to speak. . . .

“I was walking through town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little
wild birds, shivering with cold and fright.

I stopped the lad and asked, “What do you have there, son?”

“Just some old birds,” came the reply. “What are you going to do with them?” I asked. “Take ’em home and have fun with ’em,” he answered. “I’m gonna tease ’em and pull out their feathers to make ’em fight. I’m gonna have a real good time.”

“But you’ll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do then?”
“Oh, I got some cats,” said the little boy. “They like birds. I’ll take ’em to them.”

The preacher was silent for a moment. “How much do you want for those birds, son?”

“Huh?? !!! Why, you don’t want them birds, mister. They’re just plain old field birds. They don’t sing. They ain’t even pretty!”
“How much?” the preacher asked again. The boy sized up the preacher as if he were crazy and said, “$10?”

The preacher reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy’s hand. In a flash, the boy was gone. The preacher picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars ersuaded the birds out, setting them free.

Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the preacher began to tell this story:

One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting. “Yes, sir, I just caught a world full of people down there. Set me a trap, used bait I knew they couldn’t resist. Got ’em all!”

“What are you going to do with them?” Jesus asked. Satan replied, “Oh, I’m gonna have fun! I’m gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other,
how to hate and abuse each other, how to drink and smoke and curse. I’m gonna teach them how to invent guns and bombs and kill each other. I’m really gonna have fun!”.”And what will you do when you are done with them?” Jesus asked.. “Oh, I’ll kill ’em,” Satan glared proudly.

“How much do you want for them?” Jesus asked. “Oh, you don’t want those people. They ain’t no good. Why, you’ll take them and they’ll just hate you.
They’ll spit on you, curse you and kill you. You don’t want those people!!”. “How much? He asked again. Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, “All your blood, tears and your life.”

Jesus said, “DONE!” Then He paid the price.

The preacher picked up the cage and walked from the pulpit. May this message bless you in some special way as you read this.
